"Land Down Under" by Men At Work is not the Australian national anthem. But it may as well be.
The lyrics are apocalyptic gold:
Traveling in a fried-out combie
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said,
"Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."
The lyrics are humerous, but also a little bit sinister. Feels somewhat appropriate, given the conflicting feelings many Australians have about the date of today's celebration.
Happy Australia Day.
